A four-seater needs 36×54 in; a six-seater 36×72 in; an eight-seater 42×84 in; a ten-seater at least 42×108 in. Plan 24 inches of edge length per diner. Leave at least 36 inches between the table and any wall so chairs can pull out.
Rectangles seat more in less space and suit most rooms. Rounds feel more social and work in square dining rooms (8×8 ft minimum). Ovals soften a long, narrow room. If guests vary, a rectangle with an extension leaf is the most flexible choice.
